My husband and I were relocating to Chapel Hill for graduate school, ready to start the next stage of our lives. We had roughly 50 boxes and 4,300 pounds of things to move 270 miles, and I knew straight away we’d want professional help.

Pickup day
The consistent communication beforehand meant we felt genuinely prepared. As promised, the driver called 20 minutes out to confirm the best street for loading access, then called again on arrival. I’d have preferred texts for some of those updates, and the calls worked fine.
The movers turned up shortly before 9 a.m., a little early, and got straight to work. They came fully prepared with boxes, packing paper, moving pads, and everything else, and they treated our things with real care. They built a custom box for a 6.5-foot mirror.
Because we’d packed some boxes ourselves, loading started immediately while two of the crew packed the rest. My husband and I stood in the kitchen deciding what went and what stayed. Beyond coordinating with the front desk to move the truck briefly so someone else could reach the loading dock, I had time to deal with a few bags of recycling and plan the unload with the new building.
The initial estimate had underestimated how many boxes we’d need, and the movers had brought extras. Their professionalism put me at ease about it rather than making it a problem.
Delivery day
I’d been told to expect delivery about 48 hours after the Monday pickup. On Tuesday I got a call saying the truck was already in the area and could do a full or partial unload a day early. I wasn’t at the new place yet, so we stuck with Wednesday, and two people arrived to unload and assemble everything.
The crew worked with me and the building’s admin team to sort out the best route through the building and which doors and elevators were available, which got them going quickly and without hassle. Everyone was courteous and it went smoothly, and it took four and a half hours to unload. I think a three-person crew would have been faster, and I was still pleased with the two who came, who carried empty boxes out on their trips back to the truck.
Nothing was missing. Two items were damaged: cracked glass in a picture frame and a quarter-sized hole in the living room ottoman. The mirror that needed the custom box arrived perfect. Both problems were minor enough that filing a claim didn’t seem worth it.
Final thoughts
From start to finish this was close to a dream move. The proactive communication before, during, and after is what gave me peace of mind and let me know what to expect, and the movers were courteous and efficient and careful with our things.
Being there for both loading and delivery mattered too. It made it easy to answer questions and work out efficient solutions with the crew in real time. Next time I’d pack more boxes myself to bring the cost down, since the price was the one thing I’d call steep. Otherwise I’d gladly choose North American again. Their clear, kind, professional approach dealt with exactly the anxieties I went in with, and saved us a lot of time and energy.

These are the practical steps we recommend based on Kyle’s experience:
- Insist on an in-person estimate: North American sent someone to Kyle’s apartment, and his binding quote matched his final bill to the cent. That is the single clearest difference between his move and the ones that end in a surprise.
- Ask a pricier company to match a cheaper quote: North American wasn’t Kyle’s lowest number and matched Allied’s. Asking cost him nothing and got him the rep he actually wanted to work with.
