Price my move

This account is based on a conversation with Cindy A., who moved from Fairfax, Virginia, to Wilmington, North Carolina, in November 2022 using Bold Moving and Storage. The conversation has been edited for length and clarity.

My move from Virginia to North Carolina

My husband, Alan, and I knew about our move almost two years before it happened. We were retiring, and we wanted to trade Fairfax, Virginia, for the lower cost of living in Wilmington, North Carolina. That much lead time gave us plenty of room to start decluttering and downsizing long before a truck ever showed up.

We ruled out doing the move ourselves, a hybrid move, and moving containers early on. We wanted an experienced full-service crew, even if it cost more, because we weren’t willing to risk loss, damage, or a missed delivery date to save a few dollars. We had our cat, nearly 100 boxes, and a house full of antiques and specialty tools to get across two states.

Keeping costs under control still mattered to us, and moveBuddha’s moving cost calculator was a useful tool for budgeting before we ever got a quote.

Why I chose Bold Moving and Storage

My sales representative at Bold was helpful and professional through the whole quote process. I liked that our things would ride on a dedicated truck, get delivered the day after loading, and that a four-person crew would get the job done quickly.

The quotes I got were higher than I expected, even though Alan and I were moving less than 400 miles and doing almost all of the packing ourselves. Bold’s estimate was the highest of the three we compared, but it turned out to be the most accurate.

Quotes I compared

It took me about a week to research movers, schedule virtual surveys, and get three different quotes. Here’s how they compared once I had numbers in front of me:

Company Move size Estimated cost
Mayzlin Relocation 8,000 lbs $6,000
Two Men and a Truck 903 cu ft $6,100
Bold Moving and Storage 11,900 lbs $7,500

Our full-service quotes were based on somewhere between 9,000 and 12,000 pounds of household goods, and each one included door-to-door transportation, loading and unloading labor, minimal packing since we handled nearly all of it ourselves, basic released-value coverage at $0.60 per pound per item, and all applicable fees, taxes, and surcharges.

Pickup day

Bold’s crew showed up at noon on move day. Before they touched a box, they walked the house with us and reviewed the bill of lading and our other moving documents. I was impressed with how experienced and efficient the crew was, especially how carefully they wrapped our antiques in quilted pads and taped them tight. Alan and I spent the day packing last-minute items and tidying up while they worked. Loading took eight hours. It was a long day, but I wouldn’t change a thing about it.

Delivery day

Because we moved outside of peak moving season and our things rode on a dedicated truck instead of one shared with other customers’ belongings, the truck that pulled away from our home in Virginia showed up in North Carolina the following day. Bold’s movers worked quickly, followed our instructions closely, put everything where we wanted it, and reassembled our bed and tables. Unloading went faster than loading had. The one hiccup: some of our larger pieces wouldn’t fit through the narrow doors in our new place. If you’re booking a move into an older or smaller home, measure your doorways ahead of time so you don’t hit the same snag. We paid our balance in full before the truck left and got to work settling in.

Final thoughts

I couldn’t have been happier with how Bold Moving and Storage handled our move. Bold’s other Better Moves Project participants report similarly good experiences, including Ross, who also had a positive move with the company. Between the accurate quote, the fast and careful service, and the way Bold communicated with us from start to finish, I’d book them again without a second thought.

Tips for future movers

These are the practical steps we recommend based on Cindy A.’s experience:

  • Get multiple quotes: Compare at least three movers before you book, even for a shorter move. Cindy’s estimates ranged from $6,000 to $7,500 for the same basic job.
  • Measure before you move: Check doorways and hallways at your new place ahead of time so oversized furniture doesn’t get stuck on delivery day.
  • Label boxes clearly: Mark each box with its room and contents so unpacking in a smaller home goes faster.
  • Declutter early: If you’re downsizing, get rid of what you won’t need before the truck arrives, not after.
  • Ask about dedicated trucks: A dedicated truck can mean next-day delivery instead of a wider shared-truck window.
