This account is based on a conversation with April D., who moved from Glenside, Pennsylvania, to Webster, Florida, in July 2023 using Bold Moving and Storage. The conversation has been edited for length and clarity.

My move from Pennsylvania to Florida

My son graduated and left for college, and I suddenly found myself an empty nester with two pets and every reason to move closer to family in Webster, Florida. I’d been living in Glenside, Pennsylvania, and once the decision was made, I spent six months planning the move and researching the best interstate moving companies for the job.

I had eight rooms of belongings, about 150 boxes worth, and a collection of irreplaceable family heirlooms I wasn’t willing to gamble on. I needed a company that knew how to move antiques, and that could hit all three things I cared about: no damage, on budget, and on time.

I spent two weeks comparing movers and checking their reviews with the Better Business Bureau before I requested a single quote, the same legwork moveBuddha’s moving cost calculator does in one step.

My Bold Moving and Storage experience at a glance

Overall, Bold Moving and Storage came through on the parts that mattered most to me. My antiques arrived without a scratch, and the crew was professional from pickup to delivery. Here’s what stood out, good and bad.

  • Communication: I moved during peak season, so I didn’t hear from Bold Moving as much as I wanted between booking and moving day. When I did call with questions, someone got back to me.
  • Pricing accuracy and transparency: Bold Moving quoted me $5,211 and I paid $6,345 total. The final number ran higher than I hoped, but it landed in the range I expected going in.
  • Professionalism: The drivers and moving crews impressed me with how friendly and communicative they were on both ends of the move.
  • Timeliness: Bold Moving arrived when they said they would, although some last-minute communication hiccups rushed my delivery.
  • Loss and damage: My fragile antiques made the trip without so much as a scratch, though a few other items picked up minor dents along the way.
  • Would I use Bold Moving again? They delivered everything on time and got my antiques there safely, but next time I’d choose a company that offers more frequent communication.

Why I chose Bold Moving and Storage

Bold Moving and Storage wasn’t the cheapest quote I got or the most expensive, it landed right in the middle, which I appreciated. They had great reviews on moveBuddha, but what actually sold me was that they don’t contract their moves out to third-party companies.

I booked loading and transportation, plus packing for my bulky items, pictures, and mirrors. My one regret is that I wish I’d had more communication with Bold Moving before moving day, though I’ve since learned it’s normal not to hear much from your mover until they have a reason to reach out.

Pickup day

Bold Moving and Storage told me to prepare by taking apart my Peloton bike myself, and they said they’d call ahead of time to give me a pickup window. To save time, I became a one-woman packing machine in the weeks before the move, donating and selling anything I didn’t want to bring with me.

Bold Moving called me on July 26 to verify my delivery window, inventory, and pricing. They said the driver would be there on July 27 sometime between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., and the crew actually showed up a little after 1 p.m., which worked fine for me.

I was happy with how the crew stayed in touch with me throughout loading. Since I’d disassembled some items and packed a lot of it myself, the team did forget a few small items, like the screws to my bed. I caught the small parts myself and made sure they made it onto the truck. It’s a good reminder that staying involved during loading matters, even when it drags on: you’re the one most likely to catch what a busy crew misses.

While the movers loaded, I moved boxes down from the second floor and basement to make their job easier. Sitting there doing nothing felt strange, so I worked online and kept the cat occupied instead. Loading took seven hours in total, and I paid half the estimated amount by personal check before Bold Moving started the drive to Florida.

Delivery day

It took two weeks for my belongings to arrive in Florida, right on schedule. Bold Moving said they’d give me proper notice before delivery, but instead they called at 6 p.m. asking if I’d be home within the hour. I was out, so I rescheduled for the next day.

I’d warned Bold Moving ahead of time that an 18-wheeler wouldn’t fit down my rural dirt road, and I paid extra for a shuttle to ferry my items from the truck to my house. When the crew showed up, there was no shuttle in sight, so they unloaded on the paved county road instead.

The crew unloaded about a third of my belongings and briefly thought the rest was on a different truck. It turned out Bold had separated my items behind a wall inside the truck, everything was present and accounted for. The delivery crew stayed professional throughout, even with the mix-ups.

I spotted some minor scratches and dents on a few items, but nothing beyond repair. I also noticed the mattresses didn’t have covers, which the loading crew should have added. Fortunately, Bold Moving carefully wrapped my irreplaceable heirlooms, and they arrived unscathed. I appreciated how hard the delivery crew worked in the Florida heat to make move-in day a little less stressful, even though the process itself was more hectic than I expected.

Final thoughts

I tried to stay proactive throughout the move, and moving irreplaceable antiques more than 1,000 miles is a big undertaking to get right. Bold Moving had a few communication hiccups, but they still pulled off a great move for me overall.

I’ve since learned it’s normal not to hear much from your mover between booking and moving day unless you reach out first, which is exactly what I did when I had questions. The last-minute delivery notice was still stressful, and because of the communication issues, I’ll likely go with a different mover next time. I’d tell anyone planning a move to research a mover’s communication during the actual moving process, not just during the quoting stage.

My ratings

Here’s how I scored Bold Moving and Storage based on my end-to-end experience.

  • Communication: 3 out of 5 stars. I moved during peak season, and Bold Moving wasn’t as proactive about reaching out as I would have liked.
  • Timeliness: 4 out of 5 stars. Bold Moving arrived when they said they would on both ends, though a few miscommunications rushed my delivery.
  • Quote accuracy: 5 out of 5 stars. My final bill of $6,345 came close enough to the original $5,211 quote that the estimate felt fair.
  • Overall: 4 out of 5 stars. Bold Moving delivered everything on time and kept my antiques safe, and that matters more to me than a few communication gaps.

Tips for future movers

These are the practical steps we recommend based on April D.’s experience:

  • Get at least three quotes before you book: Comparing four full-service movers gave April a clearer sense of fair pricing and helped her spot the outlier bids. Three is the minimum worth gathering before you choose a full-service mover.
  • Confirm shuttle and access fees in writing before moving day: April paid extra for a shuttle to handle her rural dirt road, but the crew showed up without one and unloaded on the paved road instead. A written confirmation from your coordinator the week of your move can catch a gap like that before it becomes a surprise.
  • Stay involved during loading, even when it runs long: April caught small items like bed hardware that the crew almost left behind, and staying closer to the process the whole time likely would have kept her mattresses covered too. You’re the one most likely to notice what a busy crew misses.
  • Ask about your mover’s communication style before you book, not just their pricing: April’s biggest regret wasn’t the money, it was the gaps in communication during peak season. Ask how often you’ll hear updates and who to call with questions.
  • Consider moving during the off-season if your schedule allows it: Bold Moving handles hundreds of moves a day during the summer, and miscommunication between drivers and the office is more common at that volume. Booking outside peak season can lower the odds of a hiccup like April’s missing shuttle.
