My move from Louisiana to Texas

In June 2025, my family and I prepared to move from New Orleans, Louisiana, to Arlington, Texas, for my new job. A bigger home was exciting for my wife and me, but moving with our newborn daughter and our dog made everything a little more complicated.

I priced out full-service movers, moving container companies, and local moving labor providers before I chose Solomon & Sons, a full-service mover. Early in my search, I also found moveBuddha’s Better Moves Project and agreed to share my family’s story for a $500 stipend. My move turned out to be far more complicated than I expected.

I collected my quotes the slow way. moveBuddha’s moving cost calculator shows price ranges from vetted movers in minutes, with no phone calls.

My Solomon & Sons experience at a glance

Here is how my move went in six areas, from communication to loss and damage.

  • Communication: My sales agent was professional at first, but communication went downhill after that. I never got the 24-hour pickup notice I was promised, so I had to call Solomon & Sons myself to find out when the crew was coming. After that, I struggled to get meaningful support from my service rep as I dealt with delays and possible last-minute fees.
  • Pricing accuracy and transparency: When the pickup crew arrived, many of my items were missing from the inventory. Their supervisor wanted to charge an extra $2,700 in additional moving costs for those items. After an hour of back and forth with Solomon & Sons, I got them to stick with my original quote.
  • Timeliness: Pickup was scheduled for June 24, but it did not happen until June 26. Solomon & Sons first wanted to do a late-night pickup on the 25th, which would not work with a newborn at home. My belongings did reach my new home the day after pickup.
  • Professionalism: The workers who did the actual loading were superb. I felt deceived by my sales representative, though, and I ran into multiple problems when I tried to resolve concerns with the company’s moving coordinators.
  • Loss and damage: None of my belongings were lost or damaged. The loading and delivery crews handled everything with care.
  • Would I use Solomon & Sons again? No. I never had a dedicated customer service agent, a subcontracted moving crew delayed my pickup, and we had disputes over additional fees. It was the worst move I have experienced.

Why I chose Solomon & Sons

A video call with my Solomon & Sons sales representative played a big role in my decision. The rep explained how the company would color-code my boxes for inventory, wrap my furniture, and put cardboard protectors on the corners, and showed off a clean facility. After a video walkthrough and some negotiating, I landed a lower price than the initial bid, and my estimate included furniture disassembly and reassembly, shuttle services, and basic insurance.

When I countered with a lower bid from another company, the rep detailed items that bid had missed and warned me it was a common scam tactic for charging last-minute fees. The rep also told me Solomon & Sons would handle my move directly and never contracted work out to other companies. That turned out not to be true, and the fees I was warned about showed up on pickup day anyway.

My move at a glance

I had a month to plan, so my wife and I started packing and selling or donating anything we no longer wanted or needed. We got our household down to about 50 boxes. I was also worried about moving scams, especially movers who tack on last-minute fees or do not compensate you for damaged items, so I researched companies on moveBuddha, the BBB, and other resources.

Quotes I compared

Reviews for the movers I researched were all over the place on Google and Yelp, so I got quotes from several companies to compare prices and services. That took a lot of time. I have since learned that moveBuddha recommends narrowing your search first and then getting three or four quotes.

My quotes ranged from $925 for labor-only support to $7,581 for a full-service move. Here is how eight of them compared.

Pickup day

Pickup day was the roughest part of my move. I dealt with delays, a surprise truck, and a $2,700 fee dispute, and the loading crew was the one bright spot.

Pickup delays

I was told I would get a call 24 hours before my scheduled pickup on June 24, and that call never came. When I called Solomon & Sons myself, I learned the crew would arrive on the afternoon of the 25th. It turned out my contract had a two-day pickup window, something my sales representative never mentioned.

The company then gave me an arrival window of 3–5 p.m. on the 25th, and the driver called to say the crew would not arrive until 7 or 8 p.m. Starting a move that late would not work with a newborn in the house. After more back and forth, I got pickup rescheduled to the morning of the 26th. The window was 8–10 a.m., and the movers did not show up until close to 11 a.m.

Extra fees at pickup

When the movers finally arrived, I was surprised to see the truck belonged to American Knights, not Solomon & Sons. That led to confusion with the foreman over paying the pickup fee through Zelle, and I had to check with Solomon & Sons about whether I should be paying American Knights at all. It went directly against what my sales representative had told me.

Then the foreman quoted an extra $2,700 in fees. I looked over the inventory my sales representative had sent to American Knights and found that several major items were missing, including a couch. That kicked off another hour of back and forth before the company agreed to my original quote, since I had done an inventory both over the phone and on FaceTime. It felt a lot like the scam tactic my sales representative had warned me about.

Unhelpful service reps

Every time I tried to resolve these issues by phone, I found Solomon & Sons’ service reps unhelpful. At one point, a service rep refused to answer more of my questions and said she needed to help other customers. All of it made moving day far more stressful than I expected.

The loading crew was incredible

Even though the foreman did not help with the move itself, the two men who loaded my items onto the truck were incredible. They were courteous, worked quickly, and wrapped my items in blankets for protection.

Delivery day

Delivery went much more smoothly than pickup. The crew arrived at my new home in Texas the day after they picked up my belongings in New Orleans, and they showed up on time at 8:30 a.m.

Drop-off exceeded my expectations. The movers brought everything into the house safely and efficiently, and they did such a good job that I wished I could have hired them for labor instead of doing the full move through Solomon & Sons.

None of my items were lost or damaged. That was lucky, because I had no follow-up from Solomon & Sons after delivery. When I tried to reach out, I could not get ahold of my service rep, and I never heard back.

Final thoughts

Solomon & Sons moved my belongings safely, but almost everything around the move fell short. The movers who handled my items did an excellent job at both ends, treating my things with care and working efficiently.

The rest of the experience left a lot to be desired. I heard promise after promise that never came through. My sales representative warned me about shady last-minute fees, and then I ran into exactly that on pickup day. The repeated pickup delays and unhelpful support from the service rep added even more stress.

In hindsight, I would have rented a U-Haul and hired moving labor, or paid more for a company that did not have so many problems. I would not use Solomon & Sons again. If you are weighing them, read moveBuddha’s Solomon & Sons review first.

My ratings

Here is how I scored Solomon & Sons on a scale of 1 to 5 stars.

  • Communication: 2 out of 5 stars. My sales agent was professional at first, but communication fell apart once I needed answers about delays and fees.
  • Timeliness: 1 out of 5 stars. Pickup slipped from June 24 to June 26, and the crew arrived close to 11 a.m. inside an 8–10 a.m. window.
  • Quote accuracy: 1 out of 5 stars. The foreman quoted an extra $2,700 for items missing from the inventory, even though I had done an inventory by phone and on FaceTime.
  • Overall experience: 1 out of 5 stars. A great loading crew could not make up for the broken promises and the stress. It was the worst move I have experienced.

Tips for future movers

These are the practical steps we recommend based on Cameron’s experience:

  • Read your contract closely: Compare the contract you sign to the quote you were given, and look for terms your sales representative never mentioned, such as a two-day pickup window. Ask whether your estimate is binding or non-binding before you sign.
  • Check the inventory item by item: Missing items on the inventory list are what trigger last-minute fee demands on moving day. Review the list before pickup so you can catch gaps early and avoid a dispute with the crew.
  • Confirm who is actually doing your move: Ask whether the company will use a subcontractor, and call to confirm before you pay anyone if a truck from a different company shows up. Watch for the warning signs listed in moveBuddha’s guide to common moving scams.
  • Narrow your search before you collect quotes: Collecting quotes from every type of mover takes far too much time. moveBuddha recommends narrowing your options first and then getting three or four quotes, which the moving cost calculator can do in one step.
  • Stand up for yourself and know your rights: If a mover tries to add fees that were not in your quote, push back calmly and point to your written inventory and estimate. Know your rights before moving day so you can hold your ground in a stressful moment.
