My move from California to Tennessee
A new job in Nashville took my husband, our cat, our dog, and me 2,285 miles east. We were moving a two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment plus a motorcycle, and I wanted all of it to arrive with as little damage as possible.
I’m a planner. I started strategizing six months out and spent three of those months looking for the right mover, working through Better Business Bureau ratings and Department of Transportation records on every company I shortlisted. What I wanted was punctuality, good value, and nothing broken.

- Timeliness: My U-Boxes were staged at the wrong location on move day and took a month to reach Nashville, longer than estimated. I moved at the peak of the season, which explains a lot of it.
- Loss and damage: Almost everything got scratched, and it wasn’t U-Haul. The third-party crew I hired to load didn’t use the furniture pads that came with the rental.
- Would I use U-Haul again? I rated the overall experience a 4, and I’d still go a different way next time. Not because of U-Haul, but because I’d hire a full-service mover rather than manage containers and a separate labor company myself.

Why I chose U-Haul U-Box
Price decided it, and the storage option is what sealed it. U-Boxes can sit in storage between pickup and delivery, and with a cross-country move and a new place to sort out, that flexibility mattered.
What I worked out later, and should have worked out sooner, is that U-Haul rents you the containers and moves them. It doesn’t load or unload them. So I booked third-party labor separately for both ends. At the time it felt like a smart way to save money, and it turned out to be the single decision that cost me the most.
U-Haul told me to have everything boxed before the U-Boxes arrived so loading would go quickly, and to plan where to put them so they wouldn’t block traffic or break any local rules. I packed and wrapped everything myself and paid the crew to load it.

Quotes I compared
I got four quotes, two container options and two full-service movers, and every company estimated differently. Some did in-person surveys, some video calls, some worked from an itemized list I sent them. Here’s how they came back, cheapest first.

The honest comparison isn’t the one on this table. My U-Haul number covers containers and transport only, so the third-party loading and unloading crews I hired sit on top of it, and the full-service quotes already include that labor. Anyone comparing containers against full service needs to add the labor before deciding which is actually cheaper. It’s also worth knowing that U-Pack’s ReloCubes are metal while U-Box containers are wood with a canvas cover, which matters more than it sounds over 2,000-plus miles.
Pickup day
U-Haul called ahead with an ETA for my containers. On the day they reached my place around 1 p.m., which was later than I’d hoped, because U-Haul had my U-Boxes staged at the wrong location and the crew I’d hired had to drive to several before they found them. I moved at the peak of the summer season, and I suspect that’s most of the explanation.
Then the loading crew created problems of their own. They balanced the containers badly and left several only half full. Because they told me things wouldn’t fit, I borrowed a family member’s pickup truck and drove the overflow across the country myself. It would all have fit.
They also didn’t use furniture pads or covers, and the U-Box rental comes with moving blankets included. I watched them work and didn’t say anything, which I regret more than any other part of this move. Loading took six hours, and I ended up needing a fourth U-Box, which is where my $220 overage came from. U-Haul covered the shipping cost on that extra container, which I thought was fair of them.
Delivery day
It took a month for my things to reach Nashville, longer than U-Haul had estimated. Peak season again, and I’d have liked to hear from them more often during that stretch.
The unload itself went smoothly. I hired a third-party crew again to move everything into the house, and that part was fine. One U-Box still hasn’t arrived and I’ve filed a claim with U-Haul over the delay.
Unpacking is when I understood how badly things had been loaded back in California. The only piece of furniture without a scratch on it was a curio cabinet I’d wrapped myself. I could also finally see how much empty space had been in those containers. If I’d done a walkthrough during loading I’d have avoided the fourth U-Box and the truck full of things I drove across the country for no reason.
Final thoughts
Here’s how I rated U-Haul on a scale of 1 to 5: communication 3, timeliness 4, quote accuracy 5, and overall experience 4.
On price, they were excellent. A $220 gap on a 2,285-mile move is about as accurate as an estimate gets, and $4,523 is a genuinely low number for that distance. The quote accuracy 5 is not a courtesy.
The damage was not U-Haul’s doing, and I want to be clear about that, because it would be easy to read this as a U-Haul story. The company I hired to load didn’t use the pads that came with my rental, and I stood there and let it happen. That’s the advice I’d give anyone: watch the loading and speak up. Don’t assume the crew will do it the way you would. It’s your furniture.
On timing, I moved in late June, which is the worst possible week for delays and thin communication. If you have any flexibility at all, move outside the summer. If you don’t, I’d put an AirTag in each container so you can see where your things are instead of waiting on someone to call you.
What I’d change: I’d hire a full-service mover. U-Haul did their part well and the money I saved by splitting containers and labor across two companies came back to me as scratched furniture, a wasted container, and a pickup truck I didn’t need to drive 2,000 miles. Good value for the money on paper, and not once you count what the arrangement actually cost me.

These are the practical steps we recommend based on Janelle B.’s experience:
