This account is based on a conversation with Mark, who moved from Winston-Salem, North Carolina, to Rehoboth, Massachusetts, in June 2025 using Allied Van Lines. The conversation has been edited for length and clarity.

My move from North Carolina to Massachusetts

In mid-2025, my wife and I needed to move from Winston-Salem, North Carolina, to Rehoboth, Massachusetts, for her new job. Going from a two-bedroom, two-bath apartment to a larger three-bedroom apartment was exciting, but getting everything ready for the big day was also somewhat intimidating. We decided to move about five months ahead of time, which gave us plenty of room to research our options.

I worried about my belongings getting lost or my bill jumping once the truck arrived. Friends and family told us to do our research, ask a lot of questions, and watch out for moving scams, so I took that advice to heart. My research led me to moveBuddha and the Better Moves Project, where I read other real customer reviews and decided to share my own experience in exchange for a $500 stipend.

My Allied Van Lines experience at a glance

After a lot of research, I chose Allied Van Lines, and they came through with excellent results from start to finish. Here’s what stood out most.

  • Communication: My moving coordinator was prompt and proactive about keeping me updated. I could always count on timely responses to my emails and texts whenever I had a question.
  • Pricing accuracy and transparency: My final cost was exactly the same as my initial quote. Allied’s representative was upfront about the possible need for a shuttle to get my items out of my old apartment and included it in the initial quote.
  • Timeliness: The movers showed up on time for both pickup and delivery. My belongings reached my new home in just five days.
  • Professionalism: The moving teams were efficient and handled my belongings with care. Both teams and my moving coordinator were polite, accommodating, and responsive.
  • Loss and damage: My television was damaged, but everything else arrived intact. After I got in touch with my move representative, I was able to fill out a claim form quickly.
  • Would I use Allied Van Lines again? Yes. Allied’s communication and efficiency were top-notch throughout my move, which makes them an easy choice for future long-distance moves.

Why I chose Allied Van Lines

Even after all my research, I still felt unsure about which moving company to choose, and the quoting experience with Allied made the difference. Allied was the only company that did an in-person estimate, which gave me far more confidence in the number. Its representative was also upfront that I would likely need a shuttle to reach my downtown apartment, something the other movers only covered in their terms and conditions or accounted for after I asked. The representative gave me a binding estimate that stays valid as long as my inventory doesn’t change, and confirmed I wouldn’t owe elevator or long carry fees.

The main drawback was my television, which was damaged beyond repair. I was also a little concerned that some furniture pieces weren’t protected with blankets when they were loaded onto the truck, although the movers handled my belongings with care overall.

My move at a glance

Here are the basics of my relocation, including what I was quoted and what I actually paid for my North Carolina to Massachusetts move.

Move date June 20, 2025
Moved from Winston-Salem, NC
Moved to Rehoboth, MA
Distance 733 miles
Move size 2-bed, 2-bath apartment (1,400 square feet)
Moving company Allied Van Lines
Moving quote $5,191.32
Actual cost $5,191.32

According to moveBuddha, people who compare quotes with the moving cost calculator save 30% on average compared to people who go with the first quote they receive.

Quotes I compared

I went a bit above and beyond when it came to getting quotes. After looking at the FMCSA’s SAFER website, moveBuddha, and other resources, I ended up with quotes from 10 different moving companies. My wife and I also wanted furniture disassembly and considered professional packing.

Here’s how my quotes compared, cheapest first. Allied’s quote without packing was the fifth lowest of the 10.

Company Estimated size Estimated cost
Safebound Moving & Storage 875 cubic feet $4,125.31
Mayzlin Relocation 896 cubic feet $4,464.00
Interstate Moving 967 cubic feet $4,673.84
International Van Lines 807 cubic feet $4,977.09
Allied Van Lines 5,579 pounds $5,191.32 without packing
$6,757.32 with packing
American Van Lines 6,686 pounds $5,298.71
Atlantic Relocation Systems 915 cubic feet $5,335.50
EE Ward Moving & Storage 5,201 pounds $5,565.14
Safeway Moving 950 cubic feet $5,638.00
Solomon & Sons 1,001 cubic feet $5,977.00

I got virtual quotes from every company except Allied, which came out for an in-person estimate. Each company handles quotes differently, and the policy and pricing discrepancies left me feeling a little overwhelmed.

I’ve since learned that moveBuddha recommends narrowing your search ahead of time and getting three to four quotes to keep things manageable.

My wife and I got quotes both with and without professional packing from Allied, and we decided to pack our items ourselves. That choice came out about $1,566 cheaper, the difference between Allied’s $6,757.32 quote with packing and its $5,191.32 quote without it.

Pickup day

In the lead-up to moving day, my moving coordinator stayed in contact and answered every question I had. Allied confirmed the moving details the week of the move and gave me an expected arrival window the day before.

On moving day, the team arrived at 8:45 a.m., well within the 8–9 a.m. window I’d been given. The three movers were personable and professional. They asked questions to check whether anything wasn’t being taken, and they made sure I knew where the spare screws and nails from my furniture were.

The team worked quickly and efficiently while I worked from home on my laptop, and they finished in a little less than three hours. As my Allied representative had expected, they needed a shuttle to get my items to the truck, but that was already communicated and noted in my contract. I was a little concerned that some furniture pieces hadn’t been protected with blankets when they were loaded onto the truck, but overall I felt the movers handled my belongings with care.

Delivery day

Like many long-distance movers, Allied initially gave me a fairly broad delivery window. My wife and I realized we would be traveling on one of the potential delivery dates, so I reached out, and my move coordinator quickly confirmed that our belongings would arrive the Wednesday before our trip, just five days after pickup. The driver called that Tuesday to confirm his arrival time for the next day.

The delivery team showed up on time, just like on moving day. The driver and his helpers walked through my new building first to decide where to park the truck and how to get everything to my apartment. They brought boxes and other items in with a dolly or cart, and they called out each box as it came inside so I could mark it off my own inventory sheet. Unloading and furniture setup took less than three hours.

One thing caught me by surprise: my driver arrived in a North American Van Lines truck. He explained that North American and Allied are owned by the same parent company, which cleared it up, but seeing another company’s name on the truck threw me for a moment.

The only real mishap was that my TV was damaged beyond repair. When I contacted my move coordinator, she immediately directed me to a claims form, and it was easy to complete. Everything else arrived safe and sound.

My wife and I wished the TV hadn’t been damaged, but we understood that some kind of damage is almost inevitable on a long-distance move, and Allied’s claims process worked well. Best of all, I didn’t pay a penny more than I was originally quoted, which had been my biggest concern going in.

Final thoughts

From start to finish, Allied delivered a great experience for my wife and me. A transparent, upfront quoting process, quality communication, and friendly, professional crews gave us peace of mind. Most importantly, Allied treated our belongings with care and delivered them safely and on time to our new home.

There were a few small hiccups along the way, as there are on pretty much every long-distance move, but Allied did what it promised. Thanks to its communication and efficiency, I would gladly use Allied again.

Tips for future movers

These are the practical steps we recommend based on Mark’s experience:

  • Research before you request quotes: Mark did a lot of research in advance, and it gave him confidence when he talked to moving coordinators at different companies. Use resources like the FMCSA’s SAFER website and moveBuddha to see how carriers stack up before you book a full-service mover.
  • Narrow your list to three or four quotes: Mark collected 10 quotes and felt overwhelmed by the different policies and pricing. Picking a few reputable movers ahead of time keeps the process manageable.
  • Ask for an in-person estimate: Allied was the only company that quoted Mark in person, and he said that gave him much more confidence in the accuracy of the number.
  • Ask about shuttles and access fees up front: Allied told Mark a shuttle would likely be needed for his downtown apartment and priced it into the quote. The other movers only mentioned it in their terms and conditions or after he asked.
  • Get a binding estimate and confirm what it covers: Mark’s binding estimate stayed valid as long as his inventory didn’t change, and Allied confirmed he wouldn’t owe elevator or long carry fees.
  • Price packing both ways: Packing his own items saved Mark about $1,566 compared to Allied’s quote with professional packing.
  • Expect some damage and know the claims process: Mark’s TV was damaged, but his coordinator sent him straight to a claims form that was easy to complete. Ask your coordinator how to file a claim before move day.
