Review Analysis
Customers rave about Bellhop Moving’s speed, efficiency, and friendly approach. Out of 115 reviews, nearly 70% share positive input, highlighting fast-moving crews, affordable prices, clear communication, and respectful service. Many describe the process as easy and stress-free.
On the downside, about a quarter of feedback points to problems like late arrivals, damaged belongings, and a lack of follow-through from customer service. Complaints focus on delayed service, unwrapped or mishandled items, and poor responsiveness when issues arise. Compared to traditional movers, Bellhop often wins on price and flexibility but loses ground on reliability during peak times. Most customers praise the courteous staff and quick booking, yet a minority experienced significant disruptions or property damage. While Bellhop is often a cost-effective and efficient choice, those with high-value or complex moves may want to weigh the risk of potential delays or mishandling before booking.

Average cost of a long-distance move out of Indiana

If you’re gearing up for a long-distance move, prices to relocate from Indiana typically start around $997 and can go up to $11,772 or more, depending on your needs.

What affects the price

  • Size: If you’re moving from Indiana, the cost can go up with every extra item you bring. To save money, pack light. Every added belonging increases your total price.
  • Distance: The distance you’re moving from Indiana plays a huge role in what you’ll pay. Whether you’re staying local or relocating cross-country, how far you go makes a big difference in your final moving cost.
  • Type of move: Figuring out the best way to move out of Indiana is no small task. You’ve got options, from full-service movers and rental trucks to moving containers and freight trailers. Each option has different costs, benefits, and potential drawbacks.
  • Services: You can either handle the packing and unpacking yourself or let the pros do it for you. While letting movers take over saves you time, stress, and back pain, it does come with an extra fee.
  • Seasonal timing: When you move can seriously affect how much you pay. Since moving costs often spike in the summer, you’ll save money by planning your move between October and April, when rates are typically lower.

How to save money on your long-distance move from IN

Follow these steps to save money when moving long-distance from Indiana:

  • Declutter. Reducing the volume of items you need to move can significantly decrease your moving costs.
  • Book in advance. Planning your move well in advance can help you secure better rates, since last-minute bookings are often pricier.
  • Consider moving containers. If you're looking to save money and are willing to do some of the work yourself, renting a moving container can be a cost-effective option.
  • Research and compare. Don't settle for the first quote you receive. Take the time to compare different companies and negotiate the best rate.
  • Ask about discounts. Moving discounts aren't as common as you might think. But many of the best long-distance movers regularly offer deals for special groups and professions like military members, senior citizens, and students. And others offer special promotions throughout the year. Always check with a moving company representative to see what discounts you may qualify for.

Keeping a moving checklist will also help you stay on budget and on schedule throughout the long-distance moving process.

Choosing the right IN long-distance moving option

Choosing between full-service movers, portable storage containers, or a DIY truck rental comes down to your budget, how hands-on you want to be, and how much you prize convenience. Here’s a quick guide to help you figure out the best moving solution for your relocation from Indiana.

Full-service IN movers

If you want a totally stress-free move, full-service moving companies in Indiana have you covered. They’ll take care of everything, packing, loading, transporting, and unloading your stuff at your new place.

  • Pros: Quick and hassle-free
  • Cons: It’s pricier than just renting a moving truck or storage container.
  • Consider if: You’re facing a big move. Whether it's across the country or simply a huge haul, full-service movers take all the stress off your plate.

Moving containers in IN

Moving containers are the perfect compromise between DIY and full-service moves. You can pack and load your things in Indiana whenever it works for you, while the company takes care of all the transportation. When your belongings arrive at your new home, just unload and settle in.

  • Pros: Budget-friendly prices and customizable moving options
  • Cons: You’ll be responsible for all the heavy lifting
  • Consider if: If you want to cut moving costs without the hassle of driving a big truck — especially for a long haul— this option is your best bet.

Renting a moving truck in IN

If you want full control over your move, renting a moving truck puts you in the driver’s seat, literally. You call the shots on packing, loading, and unloading, making the entire process yours from beginning to end.

  • Pros: Cut costs and keeps you in control of your move
  • Cons: Takes a lot of time and energy
  • Consider if: If you’re watching your budget or prefer to handle your own move, this is a great pick.

Things to consider before hiring a long-distance mover in Indiana

No matter if you’re sticking around Indiana for the low cost of living, amiable people, and excellent universities or leaving because of the cold and snowy winters, low diversity, and limited recreational activities, here’s what you should keep in mind before your move.

Company licensing

The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) regulate movers operating within Indiana and issue moving companies Indiana Households Goods Carriers Numbers. Check to make sure prospective movers have one and that it’s up to date.

Insurance options

Opt for Released Value Protection – a budget-friendly choice with no extra cost from movers, though coverage is limited to 60 cents per pound. For instance, if a 50-inch TV weighing 25 pounds is lost or damaged, reimbursement is just $15. To ensure coverage for your items' full value, discuss alternative options with your chosen moving company or consider third-party insurance providers.

Moving date

The weather in Indiana can affect how in-demand moving companies are, which means it also impacts pricing and availability.

  • Average winter temperature: 19°F
  • Average summer temperature: 85°F
  • Average annual rainfall: 43”
  • Average annual snowfall: 22”

Taking your car

Thinking about a cross-country move but not keen on driving your car the whole way? Consider using a Indiana car shipping service to get your vehicle safely to your new home.

Keep in mind that vehicle inspection rules can vary widely between states and even cities, so make sure to check what’s required in your new area. Take Indiana’s requirements, as an example. Indiana does not mandate safety inspections for vehicles. However, the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles requires a VIN inspection for vehicles not previously registered in the state.

FAQ

What is considered a long-distance move?toggle

Moving companies can’t seem to agree on what qualifies as a long-distance move. Some set the bar at 50 miles, while others don’t consider it long-distance until you’re 400 miles out. The FMCSA, however, pins “long-haul” status on moves over 450 miles. Whether you’re staying within Indiana, moving next door to another state, or trekking across the country, going with a long-distance mover means you’ve got experienced pros guiding you every step of the way.

How far in advance should I book a long-distance move?toggle

For a hassle-free long-distance move, try to lock in your moving date at least a month ahead, better yet, book a few months early if you can. The earlier you schedule, the more likely you are to score great rates and your preferred time slot. Plus, planning ahead gives you extra breathing room to sort your budget, declutter, and pack at your own pace.

What happens if my belongings are delayed during a long-distance move?toggle

If your long-distance movers show up late, they're generally not required to compensate you. When they pick up your belongings, you’ll receive a Bill of Lading with an estimated delivery date—but most companies allow themselves a delivery window of up to 30 days. Think your movers are deliberately delaying delivery or holding your stuff hostage? You can file a complaint with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s National Consumer Complaint Database or reach out to the Better Business Bureau for help.

Do I need to buy moving insurance for a long-distance move from IN?toggle

Moving insurance isn’t mandatory for long-distance moves, but if you’re transporting anything valuable or irreplaceable, it’s smart to look into your options. Most moving companies include “released value protection” by default, but that only covers you for $0.60 per pound. So, if your 10-pound, $3,000 statue disappears, you’d only get six bucks. For more protection and peace of mind, you can usually upgrade to “full-value protection” with a full-service mover, which covers much more. When you get your quote, be sure to ask your move coordinator about all the insurance options available.
