Their communication was great. They called ahead as promised and showed up on time. All the staff were courteous and took care with padding my furniture and taking care not to damage my walls/doors during the move process.

This was our first time using a moving company. The driver (Annie) and the crews at both origin and destination were fabulous! I would highly recommend this company!

Craig walked us through what to expect and how to prepare for the move. Dave was there first thing in the morning to explain the game plan and introduce the crew. The driver Leo was amazing! So knowledgeable, courteous, and very skilled at his job. His crew worked so hard and efficiently the entire day and didn’t slow down until the last box was unloaded. Very much a pleasant experience all around!!

Both experiences were great. I'm particularly impressed with the care they take with furniture, floors and walls. As part of this second move there was a marble table which another mover previously broke into pieces. Bekins handled it perfectly - it's all in one piece!

Comparing specialty moving services in Washington

This table shows which local movers offer specialty services like commercial moves, piano moving, storage, small moves, and military moves.

FAQ

How much do movers cost in Washington, IL?

In Washington, IL, most companies charge by the hour. A solid ballpark is $192/hour (IL average) for a moving crew.

Pricing mostly comes down to how big your place is, how hard the move is (stairs, long carry), and any add-ons like packing or storage.

Quick tip: always confirm minimum hours, travel time, and fees for stairs/elevators and long carries.

Are Washington movers priced hourly or with a flat rate?

Most local moves in Washington are priced by the hour. A common benchmark is $192/hour (IL average) for a moving crew.

Flat-rate quotes are more common for long-distance moves or when the mover builds a detailed inventory first.

  • Hourly: ask about crew size, minimum hours, and whether travel time is billed.
  • Flat: ask if it’s binding (or not-to-exceed) and what would raise the price (extra items, stairs, added stops, date changes).

What’s usually included in a full-service move in Washington, IL?

A “full-service” move in Washington, IL usually means the mover handles the heavy lifting: load → transport → unload. Packing and unpacking are often available, but may cost extra.

Many companies also include basic furniture padding and simple disassembly/reassembly (like bed frames), but it varies so it’s worth confirming up front.

  • Ask what’s included: packing, packing materials, and furniture disassembly/reassembly.
  • Ask what’s extra: specialty items (pianos/safes), crating, long carries/stairs, and high-value coverage.

Do movers in Washington require a deposit?

Sometimes. In Washington, roughly 11.0% movers take a deposit to hold your date, and others do not, especially for smaller local moves.

If a deposit is required, ask for the refund and cancellation policy in writing. Also confirm how rescheduling affects the deposit and whether any fees are nonrefundable.

Before you pay anything, make sure you have a written estimate that lists services, fees, and your move date or date window.

How do I get the most accurate moving quote in Washington, IL?

The most accurate quote comes from a complete inventory and clear details about access at both addresses.

Share exact pickup/delivery addresses, stairs or elevators, walk distance to the truck, parking restrictions, and any bulky or fragile items (pianos, safes, antiques, art, or pool tables).

  • Provide a video walkthrough or a room-by-room list with large items called out.
  • Ask for an itemized estimate that separates labor, travel time, packing, materials, and add-on fees.
  • Confirm whether changes to inventory or move date change the price.

What’s the cheapest way to move in or out of Washington?

The cheapest way to move in or out of Washington is usually DIY: rent a truck, pack, load, and drive yourself.

Want to save money but skip the hardest part? Do a hybrid move: you pack and drive (or use a moving container), then hire labor-only movers to load and unload.

  • DIY: lowest cost, most work and risk.
  • Hybrid: cheaper than full-service, less strain.

How can I lower my moving costs in Washington, IL?

You can lower your moving cost by reducing shipment size, choosing a flexible move window, and minimizing time on-site.

  • Declutter before moving day so the truck and crew finish faster.
  • Pack yourself (or choose fragile-only packing instead of full packing).
  • Schedule mid-week or mid-month when possible, and avoid peak weekends.
  • Prep for speed: clear hallways, label boxes by room, and disassemble simple furniture ahead of time.

Always confirm that “savings” don’t come with hidden fees (stairs, long carries, shuttle trucks, or travel time).

What extra fees should I ask about before booking a mover in Washington?

Before you book a mover in Washington, ask for their full list of possible add-on fees. Most surprise charges come from access issues, add-on services, or bulky items.

  • Stairs, elevators, long carry (truck-to-door distance)
  • Shuttle service for tight streets or no parking
  • Packing and packing materials
  • Special items like pianos, safes, pool tables, hot tubs, art, antiques
  • Storage (overnight or longer)
  • Crating for fragile or high-value items

If a fee depends on the situation, ask what triggers it and exactly how it’s calculated.

How much does packing cost, and can I pack myself?

Packing costs depend on how many boxes you need, how fragile your items are, and whether you want full packing or just help with breakables.

Many people save money by packing most items themselves and hiring movers for delicate, high-risk rooms (kitchen, glassware, artwork) or for fragile-only packing.

  • If you pack yourself, ask about box weight limits and labeling expectations.
  • If movers pack, confirm whether materials are included or billed separately.

Do movers in Washington provide packing materials?

Often, yes. In Washington, about 33.0% of movers offer packing materials like boxes, tape, paper, and bubble wrap.

Here are some tips on getting most out of a mover's packing materials:

  • Ask about specialty boxes (wardrobe, dish packs, TV boxes).
  • Ask if materials are delivered ahead of time or brought on move day.
  • Ask if unused materials can be returned for credit.

Tip: make sure materials are itemized so you can compare quotes apples to apples.

What does storage cost, and when does it make sense to use it in Washington?

Storage costs depend on how much you store, how long you store it, and whether the storage is climate-controlled.

Storage is most useful when your lease dates don’t line up, you’re waiting on renovations, or you need temporary holding between homes.

  • Ask whether storage is warehouse-based, containerized, or overnight on a truck.
  • Confirm access rules (can you retrieve items during storage?).
  • If you’re storing art, antiques, or electronics, ask specifically about climate control.

How does moving insurance (valuation coverage) affect the total price?

Basic valuation coverage is often included, but upgraded coverage can increase your total cost—especially if you’re moving high-value items.

  • Ask what the default coverage includes and what it excludes.
  • Confirm whether full valuation coverage is available and how it’s priced.
  • Ask how to declare high-value items and what documentation is needed for claims.

If you have specialty items, also ask about crating and specialized handling.

How much should I tip movers in Washington, IL?

Tipping is optional, but it’s common when the crew is professional, careful, and efficient.

A practical approach is to base tips on effort and service quality—especially if the move involves stairs, long carries, extreme heat/cold, or a long day.

  • Tip per mover (not just one lump sum) if possible.
  • Offer water or snacks, especially during long moves.
  • If something goes wrong, address it with the company before deciding on tips.

Do movers in Washington offer discounts (senior, military, AAA, student)?

Some movers offer discounts, but it depends on the company and your move date. Here’s what we see for Washington (or IL):

  • Senior: 11.0% (1.0 movers)
  • Military: 11.0% (1.0 movers)
  • AAA: 11.0% (1.0 movers)
  • Student: 0.0% (0.0 movers)
  • Teacher: 0.0% (0.0 movers)
  • Law enforcement: 0.0% (0.0 movers)

Quick tip: ask if the discount applies to your exact date and whether it can stack with other promos.

Do I need a parking permit for a moving truck in Washington, IL?

Some moves in Washington, IL require parking coordination—especially on busy streets, near downtown, or in neighborhoods with stricter parking rules.

The best move-day plan depends on truck size, your street’s rules, and whether your building has a loading area.

  • Ask the mover what size truck is arriving and where it plans to park.
  • Check with your building about loading docks, move windows, and elevator reservations.
  • If curb space is tight, ask whether reserving a spot or getting a permit is recommended.

How far in advance should I book movers in Washington?

Booking early gives you more choice and better scheduling options, especially on weekends and around the start/end of the month.

If you have a firm move date, start collecting quotes as soon as you can. If you’re flexible, ask movers which days and time windows tend to be easiest to schedule.

Even after you book, reconfirm your start time and crew size a few days before moving day.

What weather should I plan for on moving day in Washington?

Weather can affect safety, timing, and how you protect your belongings, so plan around typical conditions in Washington, IL.

  • Heat: summer highs can reach about 86°F.
  • Cold: winter lows can drop to about 16°F.
  • Precipitation: annual rain is about 39" and annual snow is about 24".

Ask movers what they use for floor protection and whether they pause work during severe weather.

Walkability: 44 | Bike-friendly: 38 .

Some other advice we have when figuring out how walkable or bike friendly Washington is includes:

  • Map your real errands (grocery, gym, parks) from your address.
  • If you bike, look for calmer streets or protected lanes on your route.
  • Check transit if you want to use a car less.

What should I know about traffic and transit in Washington?

Traffic and transit in Washington can change your move-day timing and your daily commute.

Below are some considerations you should be asking about Washington's traffic and transit:

  • If you have a tight loading window, avoid peak rush hours.
  • Ask movers if they bill travel time and if a shuttle truck might be needed.
  • Compare neighborhoods by real commute time, not just miles.

How can I confirm a mover is properly licensed for my move?

It depends on your move type. Crossing state lines means interstate rules. Staying within Illinois means intrastate rules.

Here is what you should do for both options with a move involving Washington:

Interstate move: ask for the mover’s USDOT number, then confirm the company name on your estimate and contract matches what you see in the USDOT listing.

In-state move (IL): In Illinois, regulations on in-state moves and local movers are set forth by the Illinois Commerce Commission. To move household goods locally and intrastate, companies need to have a Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity, so make sure the companies you’re considering have one and that it’s current.

In addition to checking these institutions, consider doing the following:

  • Get a written estimate and clear cancellation terms.
  • Ask about valuation coverage and how claims work.

Do I need to follow HOA or apartment building rules on moving day in Washington?

Usually, yes. HOA and apartment rules can affect parking, elevator access, and how long the move takes in Washington.

  • Reserve a loading dock or elevator if your building requires it.
  • Ask if you need a certificate of insurance (COI).
  • Confirm move-in/out hours, quiet hours, and weekend limits.

Send the rules to your mover before moving day so the crew shows up prepared.

Should I reserve an elevator for moving day?

If you’re moving into or out of a multi-story building, reserving an elevator can prevent delays and reduce damage risk in shared spaces.

  • Reserve the elevator and confirm padding/protection rules.
  • Align the mover’s arrival window with your reservation.
  • Ask whether there’s a separate service elevator for moves.

If reservations aren’t available, plan extra time and ask the mover how elevator wait times affect billing.

What specialty moving services are common among movers in Washington?

Many movers in Washington offer specialty help, but it varies by company. If you have a heavy or fragile item, confirm it before you book.

  • Pianos: 56.0% (5.0 movers)
  • Safes: 44.0% (4.0 movers)
  • Pool tables: 11.0% (1.0 movers)
  • Hot tubs: 0.0% (0.0 movers)
  • Art: 11.0% (1.0 movers)
  • Antiques: 11.0% (1.0 movers)
  • Crating: 11.0% (1.0 movers)

Tip: for specialty items, get the scope and price in writing, and ask how the mover protects the item and what coverage applies.

Can movers in Washington help with small moves or labor-only services?

Yes. In Washington, about 33.0% of movers handle small moves, and about 33.0% offer labor-only help if you are using a truck or container .

Labor-only is a solid way to save money and still skip the heavy lifting.

What payment methods do movers in Washington accept?

Payment methods vary by mover, so confirm accepted options before booking and again a few days before moving day.

  • Credit cards
  • Cash
  • Money order
  • Cryptocurrency (where available)

If you’re paying a deposit, ask how refunds work and what documentation you’ll receive for your payment.

What should I do before moving day besides booking a mover?

Do the paperwork and logistics early so moving day isn’t spent on avoidable delays.

  • File your change of address before you move.
  • Transfer utilities, internet, and any building access credentials.
  • Confirm parking plans, building rules, and elevator/loading reservations.
  • Take photos of high-value items and note existing damage for easier claims.

A few days before the move, reconfirm start time, truck size, and your best contact number with the moving company.
